For my year-end wrap-up I’m letting my pictures do the talking. Pictures with words, that is. My thanks for the inspiration to Nancy Nall, whose blog I’ve enjoyed for many years.
January
Covid boosters became widely available (I got my first booster in September 2021 and my second in March 2022). Humboldt Distillery saw an opportunity to seize the zeitgeist.
February
Taken somewhere in San Francisco. Show of hands?
March
I will never not be interested in the latest names for meat-ish non-meat. These “ChiQin nuggets” are from Quorn. (I wrote about chik’n and other birds here and here. And I talked about phunny phood spellings with Helen Zaltzman of The Allusionist Show back in 2019.)
April
I liked this billboard on College Avenue in Oakland, put up by the folks at JewBelong. Lately they’ve switched their messaging to calling out antisemitism.
May
In early May the majority US Supreme Court opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization was leaked to the press. There was an immediate outpouring of protest; these signs in my Oakland neighborhood, near Lake Merritt, were among the reactions.
June
The “San Francisco Dream Journey” was looking for accounts of strange dreams.
July
In July I spent about ten days in Los Angeles, helping my brother recover from spine surgery. One day, when he was feeling better, I accompanied my friend Suzanne, a rare-book dealer, to an estate sale so widely hyped that we waited in a long queue to get inside the house. Suzanne combed through the books while I enjoyed this poster. As it happens, I’ve written about “shitshow” for the Strong Language blog.
August
A billboard (on Oakland’s Piedmont Avenue) for Volofit (on Oakland’s Broadway): “F%$# Boring Workouts.”
September
At Oakland’s Lake Merritt: Why are you littering?
October
I traveled in October: to New York, to London (on the Queen Mary 2), to Bristol, to Cardiff. You can read about my travel adventures on Medium (start here and work backward); here’s some bilingual wordplay in Cardiff, Wales. (Twitter/Mastodon friend Hugo VK helped translate: “CAERedigrwydd’ from Caerdydd [Cardiff], is one letter away from ‘caredigrwydd’, kindness.”
November
Give that copywriter a raise.
December
Started with a booster, ended with a booster.
And here’s one for the road, taken earlier this week at 34 Minna Street, San Francisco.
Nothing to see here. Move along.
Wonderful signs of the times. What a way to chronicle!
