Are names destiny? I can’t help wondering whether Ellen Jovin, a communications expert and language maven whose surname rhymes with rovin’, was fated to travel to 47 states with her portable Grammar Table, and then write a book about her adventures called Rebel with a Clause: Tales and Tips from a Roving Grammarian. She certainly took to the project with energy and élan, and the result is a book so delightful that it could win over even the grammarphobic and the grammar-shy.

Issey Miyake, who died August 5 at 84, was acclaimed for his inventive fashion designs and best-selling fragrances. But he was also a prolific and often playful inventor of names. His company’s brand family is full of international references and multilingual puns—appropriate for a Japanese-born designer whose first collection debuted in New York (in 1971) and who was the first foreign-born designer to show at Paris Fashion Week (in 1974).

A break, a gap, an interruption. Example sentence (and also a true statement): I’ll be on hiatus from the blog during the month of August.
I may pop back in once or twice—I’m reading a book I’d like to review here—but mostly I’m going to imitate French people, or New York psychoanalysts, and take the month of August off. I’ve never done this before, but every sixteen years or so—yes, it’s been that long—I figure it’s a good idea.
