Ah, what a lovely word. Currently I'm a East Bay Californian displaced (okay, STUDYING) in Glasgow, Scotland, and have experienced my first summer of -- weekly, sometimes DAILY rain. How I miss the golden hills -- green is good, too, but... so WEIRD! And strangely humid.

@TedMack: Here's something to assuage (or maybe stoke) your nostalgia: Dana Gioia's poem "California Hills in August." Gioia has been chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts since 2003; he recently announced he'll be stepping down so he can devote more time to writing poetry. http://danagioia.net/poems/californiahills.htm

Thank you Nancy for your beautiful prose. It brought back memories of picnics in Tilden. I've heard that the merry-go-round has been renovated. Weee!!

This is a beautiful word, Nancy. Thanks for introducing us.
