The Free Dictionary's word of the day for today, the sixth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, is morass, a synonym for quagmire.
The word choice may be random and completely unrelated to geopolitics. Or not.
It's definitely a coincidence that it appears on the same day I published this post about the grammaticalization of "ass." I wrote my post on Sept. 10, and besides, morass has nothing to do with extra posterior. The word came into English from Dutch moeras, which means "marsh."
