You may recall that I'm a big fan of the Trader Joe's story. If you're a fan as well, here's your chance to contribute a small piece of that story: a Fearless Flyer caption contest. The grand prize winner--or "Great Wit"--will have his or her caption published in the summer issue of the Fearless Flyer and will receive a $50 gift certificate; two "Honorably Clever" runners-up will each receive a $25 gift certificate. Deadline is May 9.
There's something reassuringly old-fashioned about this contest: it reminds me of the jingle and slogan contests of the 1950s and 1960s so beautifully evoked in The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio, Terry Ryan's tribute to her mother. It took real talent and perseverance to win a corporate contest back then, not merely the luck of the draw.
Three cheers to the Trader for bringing back a much-missed tradition.
