When musician / mystery novelist / racontour Kinky Friedman ran as a third-party candidate for governor of Texas last year, he used that as his campaign slogan - "How hard can it be?"

That wasn't a comment on any particular former occcupant of the office, just recognizing that the gig is part-time at best - the legislature only meets every other year, and the real power is vested, perversely, with the Lt. Governor, who appoints the committees and the chairmen in the state Senate (Kinky came in fourth, with over 12% of the popular vote).

Mark--I thought Kinky's slogan (given to him by Molly Ivins, R.I.P) was "Why the Hell Not?"

By the way, Kinky and I are not related except in some quasi-metaphysical sense.
