Congratulations to David Alexander, a graphic designer in My Fair City, who won a contest sponsored by Oakland's Chabot Space and Science Center to create a mnemonic for the newly downsized, post-Plutonic solar system. Alexander's winning entry:
Many Very Educated Men Just Seem Uneducated Now
Last weekend, to mark the International Astronomical Union's de-planetization of Pluto, Chabot held a special exhibit and invited visitors to contribute condolences to a memorial book.
And while we're on the subject, the word of the day at Buzzwhack is "plutoed": To be unceremoniously dumped or relegated to a lower position without an adequate reason or explanation.
This huge Pluto scandal may be the funniest thing to happen in astronomy in...well, ever. I think they should have kept things the way they were if only to maintain a spectacular mnemonic.
